traveling with pets in ohio, pet friendly towns, dog friendly campus

On our way to Columbus from Bay Village (the west side of Cleveland), we stopped off to visit a friend at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio which is about 45 minutes north of Columbus. If you are traveling through Ohio, it is definitely well worth the detour off of I-71 to visit this beautiful pet friendly town and dog friendly college campus.

Kenyon College is one of the nation's finest liberal arts colleges. The atmosphere is refreshing and inspiring. Many famous people attended this fine college including Paul Newman. We enjoyed ourselves so much and didn't want to leave! But, we made the most of our brief visit.

We found a wonderful off-leash dog park on Meadow Lane near the campus. Our girl, Maya, had a romping good time making new friends at the dog park. After this, she happily rested at our feet on the patio of the pet-friendly restaurant, The Village Inn (www.villageinngambier.com). If you are looking to dine with your dog, we higly recommend the Village Inn (weather permitting). The sandwiches were outstanding!  One of the best reubens we've ever had.

Maya is pictured on a park bench across the street from The Village Inn expressing her approval as well. If you travel to this area and would like to spend some time here, there are a few pet-friendly hotels in the neighboring town of Mount Vernon, Ohio which can be found through our site.

It was such a beautiful day that we decided to explore the area by car before we headed to Columbus and we stumbled upon a little slice of heaven on earth, the Schnormeier Gardens (www.schnormeiergardens.org). We have traveled through Ohio hundreds of times and have never before heard of this amazing property. There are 50 acres of some of the most beautiful gardens that we have ever seen tucked away in the rolling hills of Ohio. We learned that there will be an open house at the Schnormeier Gardens during the first week of June. We've already got it on our schedule. Now we just need to find out if we can bring the dogs!

We hope our roving rover report has insprired you to continue learning about places to go and see with your dog because, after all, home is where your hound is.  Safe and happy travels all and thank you for reading the Travel Dog Blog!
